Youth Council Meeting July 7, 2010

‘The Youth Council shall assist in developing the local workforce plan pertaining to youth and youth services, approving eligible providers of youth services, coordinate youth workforce development activities, and oversee public relations about youth programs.’

Minutes

Present: Kathleen Fenlon, Dona Falciatano, Eric Bresee, Daniel Carman, Janet Lanious, Barry Tatters Staff: Jeff Grimshaw, Thad Mantaro, Nick Della Penna

Kathy Fenlon called the meeting to order.

1) Approval of Meeting Minutes from April 7, 2010

Eric Bresee moved to approve the minutes. Janet Lanious seconded. The minutes were approved.

2) Roundtable Update – All

Members presented provided an update to activities at their organizations.

3) Performance Review – Janet Lanious (DET)

Janet reviewed the performance results for the third quarter of PY’09, which ended March 31, 2010. We are meeting all three Common Measures for Youth. Final results for the program year will be available in August.

4) Summer Youth Program - Janet Lanious (DET)

Janet reviewed the plans for this summer. Last year we were able to fund 473 youth. This year, we are looking at about 110- 40 through WIA funding and 70 through DSS funding.

The Council discussed ways to engage private businesses next year to step up and increase their hiring of youth next summer. We will add this to the agenda for our next meeting.

5) 2010 Youth Summit - Kathy Fenlon

The Youth Summit is scheduled for October 21, 2010 in Sheldon Hall. A plenary speaker has been arranged. Workshop topics include exploring careers in Healthcare, Law Enforcement and Food Service.

6) Career Ladder Map Update – Nick Della Penna/Thad Mantaro

Nick stated that Thad Mantaro will be taking over the lead on this project. Thad has been working with Board member Evelyn LiVoti on ideas for marketing the site. Thad is also working on setting up a series of focus groups with LOCY and for Youth Court members, Youth Advisory Council, YMCA Youth Center and OCO afterschool programs. He will also be working with Chris Weaver and the One-Stop staff and school guidance counselors for ideas.
